Rescat Qualified List 2009

RESCAT Online

RESCAT (Research Catalogue) Online – this research publications database contains information on HSE researchers’ scientific theses, refereed articles, scientific books, the university’s own publications, articles in collections and working papers, and also other publications by research and teaching personnel, such as textbooks and popular articles. The database is also used for purposes of research evaluation. The research database has open access: all who are interested can follow what kind of research is being done at HSE and what the researchers are publishing.

Information on the research register

HSE has kept a research register since 1980, and annually published a catalogue of research in progress (licentiate research, doctoral thesis research and other scientific research, excluding Master's theses). This catalogue goes by the name of the Research Catalogue, and was last published in printed form in 2004 (covering years 2002-2004). The Research Catalogue serves not only members of the academic community, but also representatives of the world of business, who may be broadly interested in HSE research.

In the late 1980’s, when the joint university research database project initiated by the Ministry of Education came to nothing, HSE started to plan its own research database, the Helecon database run by the library. The first project was carried out by special planner, Matti Yrjölä, and the first version of the RESCAT database came into use in 1993.

Quite soon after the new database was introduced, it became necessary to transfer it to the Internet, and development work on that began in 1997. The RESCAT Online database has been in use since 1999, and the new database was compiled by senior researcher, Anssi Öörni. This database has been composed with Basis programming, as is the Helecon databases at the Helecon Information Center.

The database comprises:

1. An actual research database, which describes all ongoing research projects (Projects)
2. A publications database, which covers all research community publications classified since 1992 (Publications)
3. Other scientific activity (Activities)

Projects (research projects)

The following information is gathered from actual research projects:

* department and subject name/unit name
* research title (Finnish and English)
* name and position of the project manager (in research projects)
* researcher’s name and degree
* description of research (Finnish and English)
* key words, describing the contents of the research (Finnish and English)
* start and end dates of research
* type of research (licentiate, doctoral thesis, officially commissioned HSE research, externally funded by main sponsors, and jointly funded research)

Publications

Publications are classified and the following information is gathered from them:

* type of publication:
· doctoral dissertations
· Licentiate theses
· Articles in peer-reviewed journals

* country: country where the series, collection or book was published
* department index:: name of department of author of publication

* first author from HSE: publications with several authors are catalogued under the department and subject of the author appearing first on the list of authors. This ensures that a publication is catalogued only once.
* project index: refers to an ongoing research project or results received from one, which have already been published. The name of the project is also to be given, as the project may not yet be included in the database.
* title in original language: the publication’s name is entered in its original form
* title in English: (if the publication's original language is other than English, this field is optional)
* authors: all the authors of the publication as they appear in the publication: surname, first name, etc.
* title of series or collection: to be entered in original form

Database maintenance

The Research Services Unit maintains and updates the RESCAT Online research database based on information sent by researchers. The researchers send publications for viewing and project data on a form for entering into the database.
